Start with the panel, not the front of the bottle
Why the check runs on the back of the bottle, and why the passes are ordered this way.
The front of a supplement bottle is advertising with a product name on it. The Supplement Facts panel is a declaration made under rules. Those are different kinds of statement and only one of them can be checked.
So the audit below never looks at the front. It runs entirely on the panel, the other-ingredients line and the suggested use, all of which are on the back of every bottle in the aisle and all of which are legible in a shop without opening anything.
The five passes are ordered by cost rather than by importance. The first takes about five seconds and eliminates a large share of the category. The last takes longest and matters most to the smallest number of people, which is the right way round for a check somebody is going to run standing up.

The five passes, one at a time
What each pass asks, what failing it means, and how long it takes.
Pass one: can you see every amount?
Look down the Supplement Facts panel. Every active should carry a milligram figure of its own. A line reading proprietary blend with a single total after it is the failure mode: it tells you the sum and hides the split, and a blend can be 95 per cent of its cheapest ingredient without contradicting anything printed. This pass eliminates a large share of the aisle in five seconds.
Pass two: does the amount name what the research counted?
An extract weight is not a dose. Research on these plants counts the active fraction: hydroxycitric acid, EGCG, capsaicinoids, piperine, acetic acid. A panel that prints a standardisation percentage lets you convert. A panel that prints only the extract weight does not, and the gap can be a factor of ten in either direction. Caffeine anhydrous is the honourable exception, because the label unit and the research unit are the same compound.
Pass three: what does the serving arithmetic come to?
Three numbers on the panel: serving size, servings per container, and the amounts. Multiply out. A bottle of 60 capsules at two a day is thirty days, not sixty, and the per-day amount is what matters rather than the per-capsule figure. Do the same with the price: cost per day is the only figure that compares two bottles honestly.
Pass four: what is the label actually claiming?
Read the claim on the bottle, then read the advertising around it. The bottle is written under a legal ceiling and tends to say something modest about supporting a normal process. Where a banner promises considerably more, the gap between them is the size of the marketing. Anything on a separate insert or a web page is not the label and is not constrained by it.
Pass five: how much stimulant is in a serving?
Add up every source. Caffeine anhydrous is declared as itself. Green tea, guarana and yerba mate each carry caffeine that a panel is not obliged to total. If a label prints 100 mg of caffeine and 250 mg of green tea extract, the real figure is higher than 100 mg and the label does not say by how much. For anyone sensitive to stimulants this is the pass that decides the purchase.
Five passes, about forty seconds once you have run them twice. Pass one and pass five are the two that most often change a decision, and they sit at opposite ends deliberately: the first is the cheapest check available, and the last is the one that affects somebody the same day.

Two things are worth saying about that table before the detail below it.
The first is that pass one is worth more than any of the others, and this bottle clears it. A panel with a figure against every row is a meaningfully better object than a blend total, and a large share of this category still hides behind one.
The second is that the two failures are real failures rather than quibbles, and they are the two that would change a purchase for a specific reader: somebody trying to compare doses, and somebody sensitive to caffeine.
The two failures, in detail
The two passes this bottle fails, stated without softening.
Pass two: five extract weights with no percentage
500 mg of garcinia extract, 250 mg of green tea extract, 150 mg of vinegar powder, 50 mg of cayenne extract and 10 mg of black pepper extract. Every one of those is a weight of material rather than a dose of anything, and the percentage that would convert them is absent. This is the fairest criticism of this label and there is no defence of it. It is set out with the trial doses beside it on the ingredients page.
Pass five: a caffeine total the label does not give
100 mg of caffeine anhydrous is printed and is exact. Green tea extract carries caffeine of its own, in an amount that varies by extract and is not declared here, so the true per-capsule figure is higher than 100 mg by an unstated margin. For most adults that is a footnote. For anybody who reacts to half a coffee it is the deciding fact, and it belongs on the front of the decision rather than in it.
Neither failure is unusual in this aisle. Standardisation percentages are omitted far more often than they are printed, and almost no multi-ingredient product totals its caffeine across botanical sources.
That is context rather than an excuse. A check is only worth running if it is allowed to produce an unwelcome answer about the bottle in front of you, and on two of five passes this one does.
The three passes it clears, and which one is worth most
Three clears, and why the first of them is worth more than the other two together.
Pass one is the valuable one and it is not close.
Six actives, six printed amounts, no proprietary blend and 1,060 mg of declared material per capsule. That means every criticism on this page can be made at all: the dose comparison, the caffeine arithmetic, the extract-weight complaint. A blend total would have made every one of those impossible to state.
Pass three clears on the arithmetic and stops short on the cost. One capsule, sixty servings, sixty capsules, sixty days is internally consistent and unusually generous for a sixty-count bottle, most of which in this category are taken twice a day and therefore cover thirty. The cost per day cannot be computed today because the seller’s listing refused every read on the day this desk tried.
Pass four clears on the bottle and fails on the artwork around it, which is worth separating carefully. The label claims metabolism support and nothing more. The seller’s marketing panels add ten benefit lines, one of which names vitamins and minerals on a pack whose panel contains neither. The bottle passes; the campaign does not.
It tells you exactly how much of each thing it contains and not what any of those things is standardised to, which makes it more transparent than most of its aisle and still short of checkable.
Running the same five passes on a different bottle
Five signals the same passes throw up on other labels in the same aisle.
- A blend total with no split fails pass one, and nothing later in the audit can rescue it. There is no way to check anything on a panel like that.
- A standardisation percentage printed against a botanical row is the single strongest signal in this category. It is uncommon, it costs the manufacturer nothing to print, and its presence tells you somebody expected the panel to be read.
- Two capsules a day on a sixty-count bottle halves the supply and doubles the cost per day. Pass three catches it, and a front panel never mentions it.
- A claim on a bottle that a panel contradicts is the rarest failure and the most serious. Pass four catches it, and it is worth putting the bottle down over.
- Several caffeine-bearing botanicals with no total is the commonest quiet problem in the aisle. Pass five catches it, and the arithmetic is usually impossible from the label alone.
The audit is deliberately portable. Nothing in it depends on knowing this product, and nothing in it requires a laptop: five questions, one panel, about forty seconds.
Run it on three bottles in a shop and the differences between them stop being a matter of which front label is more persuasive.
What the five passes cannot tell you
Four questions a label audit was never built to answer.
Four things, and they are the four that matter most to somebody deciding whether to buy anything at all.
Whether what is printed is what is inside. Every pass reads a declaration, and confirming a declaration takes a laboratory assay. A panel is a claim about contents made by the party selling them.
Whether the amounts will do anything for you. The audit checks transparency, not efficacy. A perfectly transparent label can carry amounts too small to matter, which is a different criticism and one the companion guide handles.
Whether it is safe alongside your medicines. Pass five catches stimulant load, and it catches nothing about an interaction. Piperine inhibits CYP3A4, which is the one worth raising with whoever prescribes for you, and no label audit substitutes for that conversation.
And whether you need any of it. The largest levers in this area are food, sleep and movement, and every published effect size in this category is small beside them. A label audit is a way of not being misled, which is not the same thing as a reason to buy.
